Welcome to the 2018 SEC!
We’re pleased to welcome you to Marin’s 2nd annual Sustainable Enterprise Conference (SEC). You are here as an activist-professional-world changer who cares about the ongoing journey of transforming yourself and the organization you are involved in with a new way to do business for good.
The SEC started originally in Sonoma County, going on 13 years now. We are bringing a Marin flair to the gathering and are inclusive of business and community leaders from the North Bay and entire region. Marin has a rich history of thought leadership and innovation in social benefit, technology innovation and environmental responsibility. 80% of our land is preserved for agriculture as parks and open space. 50% of our land is for agriculture and we are the birthplace of the organic and the farm-to-table movements. We are a national model for community choice aggregation with our electric utility, MCE, and it is on the path to 100% GHG emission free electricity generation. We are ranked the healthiest county in the state, we have the second highest electric vehicle ownership per capita in the state, and one of the highest rates of nonprofits per capita in the country with over 1500 registered. We also know we face lots of challenges: we have over 1300 chronically homeless and over 7% of our population are below the poverty line. A very low percentage of our young and service workforce can afford to live in the county. Nimbys seem to rule decision-making around affordable housing. The impact of climate change has arrived in full force and traffic congestion is at an all time high. We continue to see the divide grow between our haves and have-nots, and we have a high rate of eco-hypocrisy between our consciousness and high carbon footprints. Marin’s average household uses resources at a rate of 5x the Earth’s carrying capacity. So what can we do as business and community leaders to lead by example, to innovate, to change behavior and the paradigm? Plenty. And we hope you will be informed, inspired and activated by this gathering, the first of many annual and mini summits as well as workshop spinoffs that we will create during the year. We have just too much good will, resources and smart and driven people who want to make a positive difference.
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us.
